A record number of shops will open their doors, despite Sunday trading laws limiting them to six hours of transactions, while online stores expect record-level Boxing Day traffic. In total, the British Retail Consortium predicts Britons will splurge £5bn between now and New Year’s Eve.
But that spending comes at a price, according to an analysis for The Sunday Telegraph that shows Britain will begin 2011 with a £2.05bn Christmas credit card debt hangover.Shoppers will owe £150m on plastic by the start of February purely as a result of bargains bought in this week’s sales, it is estimated.
