Britney Spears was apparently spending a second day in a hospital Saturday, the result of a bizarre standoff that brought police to her house and led a judge to award ex-husband Kevin Federline custody of their two sons.
A court commissioner on Friday gave Federline sole physical and legal custody of 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James, and suspended Spears’ visitation rights.
Commissioner Scott Gordon’s ruling came a day after Spears was hauled away from her home by paramedics after police had to intervene when she refused to return the children to Federline after a court-monitored visit.
Britney Spears has been barred from seeing her children after she was admitted to hospital under the influence of an “unknown substance” following a custody dispute.
Police were called to the singer’s home on Thursday night after she refused to hand the children over to Federline, in line with a court order.
A bleary-eyed Spears, 26, who was alternately grinning and grimacing, was helped out of her Los Angeles home, loaded into an ambulance and strapped down for the journey to the hospital.
She is still being examined at the city’s Cedars-Sinai medical centre after police ordered her to be detained and evaluated.
Another court hearing will be held
Her younger son, Jayden James, was taken to the hospital at the same time in a separate ambulance, but later released.
A source close to Spears told the Daily Telegraph that her latest outburst had nothing to do with either alcohol or drugs, but he would not comment on whether she had a mental breakdown.
Police were called to the house at 8pm on Thursday and were still there two-and-a-half hours later when a further six police cars, a police helicopter, an ambulance and a fire engine arrived. Los Angeles police said Spears finally turned over her two children at around 10.50pm after hours of intense negotiations.
Gordon ordered another hearing to be held Jan. 14.
