WHAT DO U THINK TO THE LINE UP

This morning the Lollapalooza festival released their complete schedule. I’ve printed up the PDFs and begun to connect the dots. Two things immediately jump off the page: (1) Friday looks unevenly stuffed and (2) who the hell did the Toadies sleep with to score such a prime slot?

The king of the mountain, Radiohead, closes the first day uncontested. For those who worried that Lollapalooza participation would lessen the Oxford quintet’s playing time (compared to a typical tour stop), rest easy in the knowledge that Thom Yorke and co. have a full two hours blocked out from 8pm to 10pm. Getting close enough to see them is another issue. I was anticipating Phantom Menace-like camp-outs for the headliners, but the festival seems to be countering that by slotting four A-list acts right before Radiohead. Call it crowd control, but unfortunately there’s no way you’ll see full sets from the Raconteurs, the Cool Kids, CSS and Stephen Malkmus—all established draws—that day. Silly.

The weekend headliners battle it out. Wilco and Rage Against the Machine go head-to-head on Saturday, which makes sense demographically (dads vs., uh, dads into louder music), but the Nine Inch Nails and Kanye split certainly presents a coin toss for many. I’m siding with Kanye. He’s going to want to blow away his hometown crowd.
